＊a gold and porcelain cup は、不定冠詞 a の使い方に注意。gold と
porcelain 両方の性質を持った cup ということ。
ex.) a black and white dog 白と黒のぶちの犬
　 a black and a white dog 白い犬と黒い犬

◆that he says was taken off the Titanic
＊that 以下直前の cup の内容を説明する関係代名詞節。そこに he says
が挿入されて、この節全体が he says の目的ともなっている。
take off　＝　取り出す、持ち出す

fateful　＝　運命を決する、宿命的な

measure　＝　方策，措置
＊this limited measure　は，タバコの使用に関する細かな評価基準を設けることを指す。

◆arguing
argue　＝　主張する，言い張る

◆that it would invite people
　pushing other social causes
　to demand special movie ratings
　and complicate the system.
it　＝　this limited measure
would　＝　仮定法過去で，今はまだ実行されていないが，もし行われるこ
とになれば，という未来についての可能性の乏しい想像を表す。
pushing 〜 causes ＝ people がどんな人々なのかを説明する形容詞句。
invite 〜　to …　＝　〜 に … するよう勧める，… する誘因となる
social cause　＝　社会的大義
＊この other social causes は例えば，妊娠中絶（abortion）, アルコ
ール依存症（alcohol abuse）などの問題が考えられる。
demand　＝　要求する
special　＝　専用の，特有の
complicate　＝　複雑にする，前に　it would を補って読むとよい。
＊社会の利益のためと称して，人々が，タバコ以外にもどんどん色々な評価基準を映画に押しつけてくるのではないかと主張している。
